Shade DC

ShadeDC is a design proposal developed for the ShadeDC initiative by the Washington Architectural Foundation (WAF) and the District Architecture Center (DAC). The program challenges designers to create innovative, adaptable shade solutions for Washington, DC's public spaces where traditional tree planting is not feasible. Conceived for the Duke Ellington Memorial Bridge, the proposal introduces a modular, lightweight canopy system that provides passive shade while expressing a strong sense of cultural identity. Inspired by Duke Ellington's jazz legacy and the bridge's layered history, the design enhances pedestrian comfort, celebrates the character of place, and reclaims an overlooked piece of civic infrastructure as a more welcoming and engaging public space.
